Rock on, Papa we got your back…

This week: It’s Sort of a RANT!

It’s no wonder kids bully other kids..
As I sit and go through the stories of the day, I have invariably come upon a common thread–a link.

Today, 9 April 2010 A.D., the common link or LCD (remember Lowest Common Denominator from grade school mathematics) is once again, the bullying of one child or children to another.

As I read these stories, (several in the last week) I pray for the victims and their families and then my gut instinct begins to kick in. What is so familiar about the tone and specifics of the bullying attacks? Why are young people willing to vilify each other over gossip or made up information?

I could give the usual opinion of parents not listening, yada, yada, yada… but I won’t. You are not surprised, I am sure. My theory: When young people see that media and “celebs” from all walks of the social strata beat up on a old guy well …all bets are off.

The NY Times, (insert finger in mouth as if to simulate barfing) barely hanging on financially and becoming the “Old Grayer Lady” by the moment has decided that Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI needs to be beaten to a pulp.  The ironic thing is that supposed, enlightened thinkers have joined in the pile-on.

Pope Benedict the XVI came to the U.S. two years ago and won the hearts and more importantly, the minds of the sane portion of the American people. Oh boy, the NY Times and their elitist buddies were teed off. The MSM had tried since before his election to demonize Ratzinger whenever his job at CDF made the world news cycle. When Herr Ratzinger was elected the Pontiff, (by and under the protection of the Holy Spirit and not by a majority party) the cake eaters were furious.

I remember watching television as the announcement was made: “Habeamus Papam; Josef Cardinal [YEAH!] Ratzinger!” I was in Aruba at the time and believe me I would have traded that trip for a trip to Rome without a doubt. The emails started flying, the texts zooming cell to cell, the grimacing among the elites began immediately. The plan to dethrone Pope Benedict XVI began in the the lairs of the Godless on that day.

At first, the powers that be were very quiet. Slowly, stories of a Nazi Hitler youth and other references to this German Pope were dropped here and there like a trial balloon to the simple-minded masses. As if tipped off, the Vatican announced the new Pope’s visit to the U.S.–NY and DC… Now began the hand-rubbing and lip-licking in “Elitistville”. We got him now, they chuckled over “Grey Goose” on the rocks,  in their usual meeting places after a long day working hard to protect the minds of dum dum dummie Americans.

Then he came…and America opened their arms to our Bavarian Holy Father. I was on the corner of Fifth Avenue, a block from St. Pat’s in NYC from 4:30 am in order to secure a front row seat. I had taken 3 young people ages 13 to 20 with me that day. They were up and ready to go earlier than I asked them. They had prepared a picnic lunch for us and secured small camping chairs and had Rosaries in hand. I was proud of our little group. We were going to see our Pope-no matter where he was from or who he was. He was Peter and upon that Rock Christ built His Church.

The NYC police were awesome and were as excited as the crowd waiting to see our Holy Father. The weather was beautiful and the crowds amazing. There were only two small groups of about 10 people each that were protesting about the victims of abuse and a group that were Anti-Romanists (they were really strange). The crowd did not fight them when they started to yell and stir up a problem. The faithful started praying the Hail Mary over and over again until NYC’s Finest chased the protestors away to the delight of the crowd.

While we were awaiting the Pontiff’s arrival at St. Pat’s, over 150 young priests in cassocks crossed Fifth Avenue to the cheers of the thousands lining the streets. It was indeed a marvelous day. It only got better. Pope Benedict was supposed to go another route to St. Pat’s for Holy Mass and not down Fifth Avenue. He decided we had waited long enough and he had his driver bring him down Fifth to the front door of St. Pat’s and by all of us there standing with our mouths dropped open in surprise. We were going to see him twice!! Amazing!

We waited several more hours, praying, singing and discussing our faith together in a peaceful and happy setting. The crowd then started to hum and we knew it was time for the Popemobile and Papa! I sat in my wheelchair at the police railing with a NYC police officer making sure my view was clear. It sure was…

As the Popemobile approached, the Holy Father turned to the left and I suddenly realized I wouldn’t even see his face. I caught myself in my disappointment and thought quickly how blessed I was just to be there. Suddenly, the Popemobile slowed to a complete stop right in front of me. He turned and looked at me in my chair, smiled and blessed me with a twinkle in his eye.

My head dropped down and I cried like a baby. The kids that were with me hugged me and so did the strangers whom we had met that day. I didn’t even think that it was possible that we had a photo. I was wrong.

Sarah (Catholic Teen) was armed with a cell phone and she caught the scene a second before he Popemobile came to a stop for the blessing.

She got a picture any photographer would want and managed to be able to receive the blessing also. I have posted that photo here for all to enjoy.

Nothing will take away that day from me and the kids. Not the NY Times, not Christopher Hitchens or any other Benedict-haters out there. Why? Well, this Pope, who now is accused of everything including climate change had met previously with abuse victims in Washington DC. The meeting was not on any schedule and only the victims knew it was going to happen. No media was alerted, no photo ops for Benedict consoling these sad souls. Prayer and privacy. Only a real father would know that’s what his children needed at that time of pain.

You see, therein lies the problem: bullies thrive on fear. When the Holy Father turned his back on fear that his name would be sullied and only focused on the souls in suffering, the bullies decided they would not stop until they could destroy him. Just like the bullies that have murdered and maimed the young people recently, they thrive on fear. Fear that comes only from evil. Evil that whispers to the bully: you are right, no matter what sane society says. That EVIL whisper is music to the ear of the bully-it justifies the means to that end.

Laura Ingraham, the astute commentator and faithful Roman Catholic remarked as a guest on EWTN during the Holy Father’s visit: “Pope John Paul II taught us to feel and Benedict has taught us to think.”

Well, Laura, Benedict is counting on just that.

Please pray for Our Holy Father. Here is a link to Father John Zuhlsdorf’s blog, WDTPRS for the official Prayers for the Pope.

From the the Enchiridion of Indulgences, #25:

A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, in a spirit of filial devotion, devoutly recite any duly approved prayer for the Supreme Pontiff (e.g., the Oremus pro Pontifice):

V. Let us pray for our Pontiff, Pope Benedict.
R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and bless him upon earth, and deliver him not to the will of his enemies.

Our Father. Hail Mary.

Let us pray.

O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful people, look mercifully upon Thy servant Benedict, whom Thou hast chosen as shepherd to preside over Thy Church. Grant him, we beseech Thee, that by his word and example, he may edify those over whom he hath charge, so that together with the flock committed to him, may he attain everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Click the link and purchase some great “Oremus Pro Pontifice” stuff from FrZ. consider getting a hundred pack of buttons to hand out to friends and fellow parishioners.

Thanks, Sophia
