The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has elected Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York to the office of President of the bishops’ conference. I couldn’t be happier. In electing Archbishop Dolan, our bishops have given us a man who is well equipped to lead us through the storms that have beleaguered us from without and within. I trust that Archbishop Dolan has the good will, the energy and the dedication to be able to strengthen the Church in America by enhancing our unity with each other as Catholics and by inspiring in us the courage we will all need to face the difficult questions of the day. It is especially pleasing to me that Archbishop Dolan was chosen considering his phenomenal work in encouraging vocations in the Archdiocese of New York.
Archbishop Dolan is described frequently as a ” moderate conservative”. This is, in my view, an accurate characterization. It will take a “moderate conservative” to lead America’s Catholics into the unity we all desire, but a unity that remains steadfast in the truths of the Catholic Faith. It is precisely his “moderate conservatism” that makes him such an excellent choice for the position of President of the USCCB.
Also today, the USCCB chose from between Archbishop Chaput of Denver and our own Archbishop Kurtz of Louisville for the Office of Vice President. Both are considered to be highly talented, conservative candidates. I congratulate Archbishop Kurtz for being selected to serve as Vice President of the USCCB.

Editor’s Note: When we feel particularly partisan in matters of Church hierarchy, sometimes at AlwaysCatholic we yield to someone with great sense. This is one of those times. We yield to our dear friend and colleague, Lisa Graas as she is a woman of great Faith and of exorbitant common sense. Perhaps we should have published this yesterday but we thought a day or so of reflection in this “upset election” might do us all good.
Lisa Graas certainly has put together a succinct and thoughtful observation on His Excellency, Archbishop Timothy Dolan. He is the Roman Catholic Church in America’s rising star and is ascending so fast to the top that we think that one day we will have an American born Pope in our lifetime. Perhaps Archbishop Dolan fits the bill…or the Papal Tiara for that matter!
